The Invisible Mentor Weekly Newsletter: Brain Food Fridays Number 63 – Six Books Every Professional Needs to Read!
Dear Reader,
I’m slowly working towards creating a newsletter that people will love. I did this back in 2004, so I can do it again. This week, I’ve been busy recreating one of the sales pages on my website. Don’t you just love it when you read a book that has information that you can readily apply?
6 Books Every Professional Needs to Read
I’ve written about these six books, a few times, and you can find the blog post here. And that’s because they’re foundational books that everyone can learn from. I now have links to all their summaries on the website. Although I read two of them more than a year ago, I’ve never published the summaries before.
- Lifetime Learner’s Guide to Reading and Learning: The information in this book is part of the foundation of my business, The Invisible Mentor. For years, I’ve been saying that most nonfiction books are longer than they need to be. The author, Gary Hoover says that most business books should have been a 20-30 page journal article. And he also says to scan a book before you read it. You can learn a lot about a book in 15 to 30 minutes.
- Teach Yourself How to Learn: I love this book, and I’ve communicated with the author, Saundra McGuire, by email for a few years now. I even interviewed her. The book includes an updated version of Bloom’s Taxonomy, and this information hierarchy is a game changer and will take your reading and learning to a completely different level.
- The MacGyver Secret: The year after I first came to Canada, the hit TV series was first introduced. I loved the show because I admired how the main character, named after the show, was able to solve problems with only the things he had access to at the moment. He engaged in unconventional problem solving. And I like that. The MacGyver Secret was written by the creator of the TV series.
- The Obstacle is the Way: I love this book by Ryan Holiday. We’ll always face obstacles in life and this book offers a way to deal with them.
- Opportunity: A friend recommended this book to me a couple of years ago. I love it because it shows you how to spot and capitalize on opportunities. Every adversity comes with an accompanying opportunity, so you have to be able to see it and take action during the window of the opportunity.
- Non-Obvious Megatrends: I love this book because I’m able to use the model in my business. The Haystack Method is a game changer for me, and I’m grateful to the author, Rohit Bhargava, for doing the important work.
Books I’m Looking Forward to Reading
The following books are ones that I want to read. Some came highly recommended, having impacted someone whom I trust.
- The Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy
- The Self Help Book
- Secrets to a Millionaire Mind
- Danielle: Chronicles of a Superheroine
- Making Ideas Happen
- Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself
- Delay, Don’t Deny
