The Invisible Mentor Weekly Newsletter: Brain Food Fridays Number 64 – How Do You Know If You’re Growing Or Staying Stagnant?
Dear Reader,
What does a better newsletter look like. I’m learning the importance of always being of service to others. When I’m in service and integrate what I learned about what makes a great newsletter, engagement will increase. There are many times you know something intellectually, but to really get it, it has to be in your heart.
How Do You Know if You’re Growing Or Staying Stagnant in Your Profession
How do you know if you’re learning and growing into your best self? What checks and balances do you have in place? How are you showing up to serve others? Many times there are signals in our environment alerting us to the need for change. We can always make improvements to the way we do things.
My colleagues and I were talking about the need to improve the system I teach professionals to read books. The way the system is today, people do find a lot of value. And they say so, mentioning how they’re using it. However, when I’m using it, because I’m familiar with it, I can see areas of the model that I need to evolve.
For instance, I need to do a better job of explaining how to combine ideas. I also know there has to be a better way to connect the books I read years ago, to the ones I’m reading now. A while back, I read something about a commonplace book, but didn’t fully explore it. It seems that now is the time if I want to improve my products, making them better, even if my customers love what they have access to now.
About a month ago, I was reading an article where the writer mentioned using the web-based note taking app, Roam Research. I immediately signed up for the service. Although I didn’t know it at the time, the product is exactly what I need to level up in my business and career. The app helps you to make connections among different notes. It’s based on a concept called network note taking.
It’s rough going for me so far because I’m having a hard time understanding how to fully utilize the power of the app. The YouTube videos the company recommends are frustrating me because I don’t get it. This hasn’t happened to me in a long time and I’m feeling vulnerable. And it made me realize the importance of properly explaining things and not assuming that others know what I mean.
In the upcoming weeks, my focus is on learning how to use Roam Research. And use it to create a digital commonplace book. After I understand the basics, I need to teach what I learned to another person to cement the information in my mind. Imagine if you connect your nodes by using a network system. You’ll see new connections you didn’t know existed. The app is a game changer, but I have to learn how to use it first.
Books I’m Looking Forward to Reading
The following books are ones that I want to read. I’ve started to read the books, but haven’t made a dent in the list. I realized this week that I need to give myself a break. I’m not Wonder Woman and no one expects me to be.
There’s only so much I can do. I’m rewriting my sales pages and creating content for my membership site. On top of that, I have to master network note taking. I’ve added a couple of books to the list and I’m giving myself a month to get through them.
