The Invisible Mentor Weekly Newsletter: Brain Food Fridays Number 65 – What’s the Worst That Could Happen?

Dear Reader,

These days, instead of rushing to write the newsletter an hour before I schedule it, I’ve been taking time to think about what I’m writing. I hope you can benefit from the information I share with you. I want to let you know that I was interviewed for a podcast a few weeks ago. I’ve included the link in the newsletter for you to watch it.

What’s the Worst That Could Happen?

Be curious and don’t overthink things. Last week I wrote about trying to understand how to use the web-based app, Roam Research. To recap, the app helps you to make connections among different notes. It’s based on a concept called network note taking. If you connect your nodes by using a network system, you’ll see new connections you didn’t know existed. This will be a game changer for professionals who write articles to build their professional brand.

It’s been a struggle for me to use the app. I didn’t get it. You go to Roam Research’s website and all you see is the date on a blank page. I watched several YouTube tutorials and I still didn’t really understand what to do. I watched a short video, which was about three minutes. The YouTuber explained that it’s difficult to learn how to use the app. I felt a bit better because it wasn’t me. He explained that for starters, you want to do only two things with the app — write and link.

I decided to let that sit for a while. I thought that I didn’t learn anything from the hours I spent watching all those YouTube videos. But that was not the case, one of the things I learned was to use double square brackets [[]] to create links. The other thing that stuck was having the information in a text file. I decided to test something to see what would happen in the Roam Research app. I have Books to Read lists (Heading 2) in Google Docs. I placed double square brackets around the name of the books and the name of the author.

When I copied and pasted the information into the app, it was set up exactly as it should be. As I read the books and add my notes, placing the name of the books and author names in double square brackets, as well as key information for me such as big ideas and book pairing in double square brackets, I’ll start to see the beauty of the app. Am I expert on using Roam Research? No, I’m not. But my curiosity to try something worked out. I tried something and I also knew that the worst that could happen is me having to delete the information.

In what ways do you hold yourself back because you’re not sure how to do something. Ask yourself what’s the worst that could happen, and based on your answer, act.

Books I’m Looking Forward to Reading

The following books are ones that I want to read. I’ve started to read the books, but made less of a dent this week than I did last week. I’ve read a bunch of books for entertainment that are not on the list below.I created a course and presented it to members of my mastermind group for feedback. I’m presenting to the International Mentoring Association on April 14th, so I’m working on that. I’m learning to be gentler with myself. I love to read, so I know I’ll read the books soon.
