The Invisible Mentor Weekly Newsletter: Brain Food Fridays Number 71: Does Selective Reading Work with Audio Books?

Dear Reader,

I know, I know! Today is Tuesday morning and you’re receiving Brain Food Fridays. A business coach mentioned that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to send out a newsletter. Another coach mentioned yesterday that Wednesdays at 3:00 pm is the best time to publish your newsletter. I’m experimenting and sending out the newsletter on different days. After I settle on a day, if it’s necessary, I’ll update the name.

Ask Avil Does Selective Reading Work With Audio Books?

This is a question that I often get asked, but before I answer, let me define selective reading.

“Selective reading is reading with purpose. This means only reading the text that has the information that’s useful to you. Select any book that has the knowledge you want to gain but thought you have no time for. You read only the most important information from the whole text.” Referenced: Paper Choice

I often mention the reading challenges that I host. And in several instances, participants have read audiobooks if they couldn’t get to an e-book or print book. A couple have done selective listening successfully. I’m not a fan of audiobooks because they put me to sleep. From time-to-time I force myself to listen to them because I have close to 50 in my audible account.

Now having said that, when I listen to audiobooks, I play the audio at twice the speed while I read the e-book. I’m engaging two senses instead of one, and I get through the book faster. And if I read a good book summary first to get a helicopter view of what the book is about, I get through the book even faster. Partnerships & Collaboration

I’ve partnered with Readitfor.me (one of the most popular book summary services for entrepreneurs and executives) to bring you 3 new animated book summaries every single week.

Here is the schedule for the next week:

  1. Monday-Tuesday: Team of Teams by Stanley McCrystal
  2. Wednesday-Thursday: Drive by Dan Pink
  3. Friday-Sunday: The Progress Principle by Teresa Amabile

To access these summaries, visit this page on the days listed above.

If you enjoy these summaries, there’s also a special offer on that page for you and your entire team to access their full library for one low price.

To read books faster, it’s important to read a book summary before you read the book. Book summaries shouldn’t be your professional development plan. But it should definitely be part of it. What I’m Reading

Last week, I read quite a bit of fiction, and I enjoyed them in the process. Now I’m reading On Power by Gene Simmons, the co-founder of the music, Kiss. I should be finished by tomorrow, then I’ll start to read Quora Marketing. I want to read this book because a few people have told me that they used Quora – the question and answer site – to grow their business. I’m looking for strategies to apply to my business. The Invisible Mentor Blog

I’ve mentioned The One Problem Series that I’ve been doing and it’s slowly getting traction. People are sharing the interviews on social media and some of them are now reaching out to me to interview them. I think that’s news worth sharing. The videos are short, so they’re easy enough to listen to.

I’ve created new programs, Business Knowledge Accelerator, Career Knowledge Accelerator, and I updated the Sales Knowledge Accelerator. Besides previewing a book before reading it, I also recommend that you read a good book summary to get the helicopter view of what the book is about. With so much information online, I was surprised that I couldn’t find summaries for some books on the list.

I often participate in the Knowledge Accelerator programs, so I make sure that I choose books I haven’t read. Now I have to read the books that I couldn’t find summaries for.

Why not participate in one of the Accelerator Programs. I’m also working on the Knowledge Accelerator for Women. It should be ready in a few weeks.

Until Next Week,
