Hi Reader,

Happy October! Today, I wanted to try out something new with y’all and do a little month in review, recapping what’s been shared this past month, as well as looking ahead to the new month.

September was… an interesting month, to say the least. Our 13-year-old pup, Lucy, was diagnosed with bone cancer in one of her front legs in late August. Because of this, we made the decision to amputate her affected leg to remove the pain and cancer. She’s doing exceptionally well now, but the first two weeks after surgery were exhausting and hard on us all.

In addition to Lucy’s surgery, we celebrated two birthdays in our house and gotten into the swing of the new school year, too. We’ve done a bunch of baking, too, because it’s not a birthday month without baking. 😉

How was YOUR September?

New Recipes on The Speckled Palate

This month was a little slower on the site because personally, it was a little hectic. However, I’m still proud to say that I continued publishing content through it all and shared some delicious dishes.

Here’s what’s new:

Reader Recipe Review: Spinach Madeline

a spoon holds a scoop of creamy cheesy spinach

“I have made this several times, and it has become a family favorite; even the spinach-haters love it! I make a low-carb version by using heavy cream in place of the milk and flour. It thickens up nicely on its own. I also use extra cheese, which makes it even more decadent!” – Diane about Spinach Madeline

Did you know that your reviews help Google see that my website has quality recipes AND help fellow readers? If you’ve ever tried a recipe on The Speckled Palate and enjoyed it, I’d love for you to leave a 5-star review and comment about why you enjoyed it.

Top Seasonal Recipe for September: Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned

an old fashioned surrounded by pecans on a gold tray

This Toasted Pecan Old Fashioned is one of our family favorites for the fall months, and readers seem to agree! You are actually going to infuse your whiskey with toasted pecans, so this recipe takes a few days to marinate before you get to sip it. Trust me—it’s worth the wait!

What I’m looking forward to in…

  • Making apple cider at home
  • All things Halloween—from making recipes to decorations and actually putting together our costumes (theme TBD, but hopefully including our pup as a pirate or another three-legged creature)
  • Cooler days and nights,. I hope we can spend as much time as possible outdoors

As always, happy cooking and baking,
Erin
