ποΈ My Thoughts About Generative AI…π€ (and a coupon code!!) πΊπΈ

TGIF and happy Memorial Day weekend!!
Last week, I shared tips about Using Related Categories To Improve Rankings. If you missed that email, you can catch it HERE.
Today I wanted to talk about the inevitable and unknown AI…π€
As much as I want to ignore it, I can’t. My courses and keyword strategies are highly geared towards SERP results and rankings so it’s very relevant.
In case you aren’t aware, Google will be slowly rolling out a “Search Generative Experience”. It will show ChatGPT-style generative AI results on the Google search results page. So the first page top results in Google, will appear a bit different. Our fear is that if Google is giving the answers directly on the SERP itself, it will discourage users from clicking onto a site’s link which would negatively affect our ad revenue.
First off, know that the goal of all news outlets is for you to CLICK and read their article. We, of all people, should know that. So of course, writers will 9 times out of 10 make things sound muchhh more dramatic then they are.
Secondly, I am and will always be a forever optimist. I have NO idea what the SERPs will look like when this generative AI is fully released but I am not overly worried.
Do I think it has the potential to negatively affect some of our rankings? Yes.
Am I worried about my traffic? Not really…we are in an industry where we need to roll with the changes and be ready to adapt when necessary. And realistically, if we bloggers/real people do not continue to “feed” this robot information, it wouldn’t exist. Plus, there is skepticism anout how reliable the info will be since no one will really know where AI pulled its info from.
So with that said, here are my thoughts:
- It seems like the top result will simply be (but not simply put), a glorified featured snippet with colorful boxes made to draw attention to it.
- βFeatured snippets have been around for years and have always had the same goal which doesn’t really change things.
- The new “featured snippet” generated from AI will take up more of the page but WILL still offer answers to common questions as well as offer other resources (such as websites/blogs) to click on. (Which is good!!)
-
I feel as if this generative result will only appear when it can answer a question that is less complicated and more straightforward.
- Example Queries Google Has Provided: “what planet is most similar to earth”, “where can I take the kids in charleston”, “plants for a dark room”, “wedding guest dress ideas”, “what does semi-formal mean”, “compare two lunch spots in Tampa for large groups”.
- If we are sharing information or recipes that simply cannot be answered in 2-3 sentences, we should be okay. (I am thinking recipes especially will be very hard to replace with a 2-3 sentence/bullet list result.)
- If we focus on creating “people-first content” vs. “search engine-first content”, we should be okay.

This screenshot is from the sneak-peak video Google released a few weeks ago. It looks similar to the current SREPs in multiple ways, don’t you think?
