BFW: What Is One Skill, If Learned, Would Change Your Life

Dear Reader,

Listen to the Newsletter

Dear Brain Food Enthusiasts,

Welcome to another edition of Brain Food Wednesday, issue 210. A new year is upon us, and it’s a time when we expect good things for the next 12 months. If you and I were sitting here 12 months from now, what would have had to happen for you to feel successful? Or feel you had a successful 2024?

How can I help you achieve that goal?

I was reflecting on 2023 and I felt bad because I did not achieve many of the goals I set for myself. I had just started reading The Gap and the Gain by Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan. The book advises you not to measure yourself against some ideal. Instead, look at how far you’ve traveled from a certain point. When I followed the advice, I saw how much I’d accomplished, one being writing a book.

We’re often too hard on ourselves.

Name of the Year

For the fourth time, I’ve named my year. The name for 2024 is Poised for Growth. I spent a lot of time in 2023 taking courses and updating my skills, so now I’m poised for growth. If you could name your year, what would it be?

Skills to Develop in 2024

I wrote an article for Medium on The Mentalist, a hit TV show. The article has gotten a lot of views. In the article, I talked about the skills of a mentalist and how to get them. In 2024, I want to sharpen skills such as reading body language, anticipating how people will respond in situations, sharpen my intuition, memory, and observation skills. These are the key skills of a mentalist.

I’ve started reading books that teach you those skills.

What skills would you like to develop in 2024? If you’re unsure, ask yourself, “What is one skill if I learned, would change my life?” What’s one skill that would have the greatest impact on you?

Time for Reinvention

Over the weekend, I read the article, “Some Toronto malls are booming, but not necessarily because of the shopping.” It’s about reinventing the mall to keep things fresh, so customers will go there. The article made me think, and I wondered, how can I reinvent book summary services? Yes, my Bookish Notes are more than book summaries. But is there a way for me to disrupt the industry?

The article talks about a fresh take on retail and expanding the mall experience. And it also talks about creating an experience for customers. How can you disrupt your industry or niche? How can you create an unforgettable experience for your customers? And I’m thinking about how I can do the same.

I’m leaving these thoughts with you, as you boldly step into 2024.
