Perspective

Hey Folks, today’s going to be a short and quick one. I’ve been really under the weather with this flu. It’s knocked me on my ass. Hope you’re all staying healthy and safe.

Even though I’m sick, I’m still blessed because it’s all about perspective.

Perspective

Perspective is everything.

Without it, we’re lost.

Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.
~ Marcus Aurelius

I was thinking about perspective a lot in the last couple of weeks.

I tend to think about it more when things are challenging.

It made me realize how much a proper perspective can influence our lives…

Comparison

Don’t confuse comparison with perspective.

President Theodore Roosevelt was right when he said comparison is the thief of joy.

Perspective is not about comparing yourself to others, which is a recipe for disaster, it’s about having a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something and when you have the right perspective, it changes your life.

Wealth

I’m about to be unemployed.

I’m scared and nervous as it approaches and wonder how I’ll feed my family.

But, that’s looking at my wealth without the right perspective.

  • I own 8+ properties
  • We have more than $1 million in savings
  • We have the ability to earn money in multiple ways

With the right perspective, the fear eases.

Now, I know there are options for me and my family.

I realize we’re going to be able to make this next chapter work.

Often, a simple perspective tool that I suggest more people use is the idea that When in Doubt, Zoom Out.

When we get too myopic, we lose the big picture.

When I’m too focused on leaving my job, I don’t look at the wealth I’ve created.

When we zoom out, we can see more. We can react better.

Eyesight

Eyesight is so interesting.

It’s interesting, because it’s perspective.

We all compare eyesight, but it’s not the comparison that matters.

This week, I went in to get my eyes tested again, because I’ve had some headaches and more challenges reading and sure enough, my eyes changed significantly, to me.

That last part matters – to me.

It’s the difference between comparison and perspective.

If I look at my eyes relative to the average person, I’d say my distance eyesight is great, it’s 20 / 20.

The problem is, for most of my life, it was 30 / 20 vision, which means I could see from 30 feet away what the average person would need to be 20 feet away to see.

From my perspective, my eyesight is 50% worse than it used to be.

When you want to examine a situation you’re in and apply the right perspective(s), try to:

  1. Pause
  2. Take a breath
  3. Zoom out if possible
  4. Consider different scenarios
  5. Ask if you’re seeing it from the right angle
  6. Challenge yourself to look the situation positively

TGG Podcast

This week on the Growth Guide Podcast, we talked to Simone Stolzoff about their book, The Good Enough Job: Reclaiming Life from Work.

In this episode, Simone discusses the:

  • the evolving nature of work,
  • the pursuit of fulfillment, and
  • the delicate balance between career and personal life.

In The Good Enough Job, Simone talks about what it means for a job to be good enough, and rather than treat work as a calling or dream, he asks what it would take to reframe work as part of a life rather than the entirety of our lives.
