The Invisible Mentor Weekly Newsletter: Brain Food Wednesdays Number 77: How Important is Professional Development to You?

Dear Reader,

During the pandemic, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and especially so over the past few months. I also think about my mortality and the legacy I want to leave behind. Professional development is important to me, but I often do not harness and leverage my professional development to accelerate my business and career so that I can create something to leave behind.

I know that I could be further along, and for the past year or so, I’ve been doing something about it. I still love to read fiction, but I also want to read nonfiction more intentionally. I think about the skills I want to master and other things I want to learn, and determine if I already own books on those topics. One of the things I’ve discovered is that I love a good challenge, and will stick with it.

Although I’ve been creating challenges since 2013, I recently realized how good I am at completing them. That surprised me because I had never thought of that before. If you participate in a reading challenge, the best way to get the most from it is to spend a lot of time on choosing your books. I know this, but I don’t always do that. And that’s a weakness that I’m working on correcting.

Right now, I’m hosting a reading challenge in my Facebook group, Reading Rocks: Read a Book, Discover Solutions, Change the World. During the challenge, participants will read eight books and will connect the ideas among all the books. I created a video to teach participants how to learn what they need to know from each of the books. The concept is called leadership reading. I used to call it selective reading, but I prefer the new name. This is not a name I came up with, I learned about leadership reading in the book, Turn the Page. You can use this reading challenge to kickstart your professional development and use the knowledge to accelerate your business and career.

How Important is Professional Development to You?

If you’re not growing, it means that you’re dying. The world is changing too much, therefore, it’s impossible to stand still. You have to decide for yourself, the role professional development will play in your life. It’s only then that you’ll embrace it and choose the form of professional development that suits your lifestyle.

My primary way of learning is by reading books, although I do take courses from time to time. When you decide that professional development has to play a role in your life, engage in activities that will take you closer to your life goals.

Right now, I’m reading How to Set Goals with Kaizen & Ikigai by Anthony Raymond and enjoying the new knowledge I’m gaining about these Japanese concepts.

What I’m Reading

I’m wrapping up How to Set Goals with Kaizen & Ikigai by Anthony Raymond. I plan to read Level Up and The Round Table. I also want to go through the PhotoReading and Future Mapping courses again this weekend.

The Million Dollar Greeting

Last week I wrote about how disappointed I was with The Million Dollar Greeting. I had problems with the layout of the book. And I didn’t get as much out of the book as I wanted. I reviewed my notes and restructured the information, so it made more sense to me and I think it turned out okay.

I created sections in my notes called Recipe for Success and Core Values and pulled information from the different companies, placing them in the relevant sections. This allowed me to get a better grasp of any common threads through the nine companies. The author should have done a better job of this. And there are instances when you’ll have to do the same to get the most from the books you read.

The next step for me is to add the information to Roam Research to see what I’ve missed.

Teach Online in 2021

I bought this book because I read another book by the author, Dr. Andy Williams, that was very good. If you’re planning to sell courses on Udemy, then this is a good book to read. I have no plans to sell courses on Udemy because I’m happy with the New Zenler learning management system.

I found several sections in Teach Online in 2021 that are helpful to me. For instance, I like the way the author explains the different sections of a course and what’s included in each section. That information is a gold mine. Dr Andy Williams used to be a teacher in the United Kingdom, so he has a lot of experience in curriculum design and lesson plans.
